On Monday the 16th May, my sister and I took part in a family tennis tournament run by St Gerard’s Junior School for Std 5 and 6. It was a really fun two and half hours where a student and parent/ sibling play in a doubles tournament which is followed by a barbecue.
There were six doubles teams in our section (three sections in total), so we had to play five matches in what is known as a round robin. The matches were only five minutes long which wasn’t easy as you were never sure when the whistle would be blown.
Amelia really surprised me as I haven’t really seen her play much tennis and somehow we made our way into the semi-finals. We were playing the Waters, a team that we had already beaten in our group but this time it wasn’t quite as easy. We won 8-6 but the match was much tighter than the previous meeting.
The final was against the McGoverns and we were well matched as the game went to 9-9. It was very tense match and I could see that Amelia was quite nervous as we hadn’t expected to get that far. There also were quite a few people watching us. Sadly we lost the last point in an thrilling rally in which we must have hit at least 15 shots. It was a shame but they other team definitely deserved it.
There was a great atmosphere and a lot of parents. Julie had organised it all so well starting the Stds 3 and 4 at 5.30pm and Stds 5 and 6 at 6.00pm. An extremely entertaining evening for all.
